The family of Decker moved from Louisiana to Georgia during the summer of 1995. Decker began to write songs and making frequent trips to Nashville to look for any record deals. Songs were released to record companies as well as other artists by an agent from Big Yellow Dog Records agent when she was 17. The moment Mercury Records president David Massey saw the demos of Decker, he sent the songs on to L.A. Reid head of the associated Island/Def Jam label group and Reid agreed to sign her up for the terms of a recording contract. Jessie James released her debut album in August 2009. The album was self-titled album. Jessie James was reasonably successful and also featured Wanted the single which climbed in the Top 40 of the singles charts. Decker was always a Country performer, but the album was produced and promoted with pop audiences in mind. Decker was dissatisfied by the two other singles from the album, fought against the management of the record label for better power. Decker then released her second single Boys in the Summer which is more traditional. Decker's album was titled Daughter of a Gypsy (or Sweet American Dreams), was pulled by Mercury when two of her singles failed to chart on the country charts.
